Dante Rescue Squad was on hand in Abingdon with many other agencies in the region to assist in moving patient's from one hospital to another as the new Johnston Memorial Hospital opened its doors.  We were happy to send an ALS crew to assist in this as it is great for the Abingdon community and the region to have this new facility.  Mrs. Harrington, Field Coordinator with the Southwest Virginia EMS Council said Saturday she was glad to see ambulance crews from as far away as Dante and Mt. Rogers.

Dante Rescue Squad would like to say a special thank you to every EMS provider out there and especially our own.  EMS providers don't always get a thank you whether their volunteer or paid but they continue to show up regardless.  If you see one of our members or any EMS provider take time to thank them for what they do.  Dante Rescue will be having a dinner Friday, May 20 at 7 p.m. for our members and their families.  This will be following our regular business meeting for the month.

The VAVRS District 9 meeting was held in Castlewood by our agency and Castlewood Fire and Rescue.  We once again competed in the BLS and ALS competitions.  Our BLS team finished first for the second time this year.  The team consisted of team leader Carla Glass, David Puckett, Jarred Glass and Vicki Mullins.  This was Vicki's first time competing and she was a great addition in the absence of Karen Jennings.  Our ALS team finished second with the team of Jarred Glass, David Puckett, Rodney Kennedy and Carla Glass.  We would like to congratulate these  people and also extend a thank you to Castlewood Fire and Rescue for their assistance in making the meeting a success.

Dante Rescue Squad attended the Russell County Board of Supervisors meeting in Lebanon, VA to request use of county owned land to build a much needed new station in Dante.  We had already requested to be placed on the agenda for the meeting and discussed what our intentions were with local representative Shy Kennedy and County Administrator Jim Gillespie.  The motion was made by Shy Kennedy to give Dante Rescue Squad a long-term lease of a 100 foot section of the former site of the Dante Elementary School.  This motion was approved unanimously.  We would like to thank the Russell County Board of Supervisors and especially Shy Kennedy for this.  We hope to have construction underway before summer.

On this Thanksgiving we are thankful for the pride our volunteers take in making sure we respond no matter what day, even on holidays.  Our agency responded to three emergencies.  Our OMD, Captain, First Lieutenant, Second Lieutenant, Secretary, Training Sergeant and two other members took time away from their activities and families to help those in need in our communities and surrounding communities.

October 25, 2010

At 02:00 we were dispatched for an emergency.  In less than ten minutes we had a full ALS crew (minimum of an EMT and an Intermediate or Paramedic) responding to the scene.  Before 02:20 we were again dispatched and had a second full ALS crew responding in less than a minute for a second emergency.  Members like these have the pride that makes this agency function.  We want to commend these members and every other member on our roster for the pride they take in volunteering to keep Dante Rescue Squad, Inc. going.

The VAVRS District 9 meeting was held today at Bristol Life Saving Crew.  Dante Rescue Squad, Inc. had members compete in the EVOC, ALS and BLS competitions.  We would like to congratulate all our members that participated in these events.  They volunteer their time to be active with our agency and then spend even more time showing pride in our agency by participating in these events.

In the EVOC competition Jarred Glass placed 3rd, Karen Jennings placed 4th and Carla Glass placed 5th.  We would like to also congratulate Associate Members Rodney Kennedy (Representing Castlewood Fire and Rescue) and Nathan Shockley (Representing Castlewood Fire and Rescue) and the 1st and 6th place finishes.  Our ALS and BLS teams competed once again but with some different members than were used in the last competition.  The ALS team (Jarred Glass, Rodney Kennedy, Nathan Shockley and Karen Jennings) finished in 3rd place.  Our BLS team (Carla Glass, Karen Jennings, Jarred Glass and Rodney Kennedy) won the competition in only their second time competing.  This team was lead by Carla Glass with her and Karen Jennings doing all the talking and nearly every skill.  Yes they had two ALS providers but one did documentation the entire time and the other maintained C-Spine.  We want to congratulate these two for the exceptional job they did.

The VAVRS District 9 meeting was held today by Castlewood Fire & Rescue.  Dante Rescue Squad participated in all competitions (EVOC, ALS and BLS).  It was the first time in over ten years that Dante Rescue had competed in the ALS or BLS competitions.  Dante Rescue's ALS Team, comprised of Captain Dan Glass, First Lieutenant Jarred Glass and Associate Member Rodney Kennedy, finished in second place.  Dante Rescue's BLS team, comprised of Secretary Carla Glass, Sonia Fields, Associate Member Kim Fields and Associate Member Nathan Shockley finished in fourth.  In the EVOC competition we had several members to place.  Jarred Glass finished first, Dan Glass finished second, Nathan Shockley (representing Castlewood) finished third, Kim Fields finished fifth, Jonathan Fields (representing Castlewood) finished sixth, and David Ratliff finished ninth.  Also, for the second meeting in a row we had the most members present with ten.

We would like to congratulate all our members that participated in these events.  They volunteer their time to be active with our agency and then spend even more time showing pride in our agency by participating in these events.  Our BLS performed very well having no experience in VAVRS competition.  Our ALS team performed well to have only three members while all other teams competed with the maximum allowed four members.  We are also proud of all our drivers that entered the EVOC competition considering it consists of driving and written tests.  We would like to thank Castlewood Fire and Rescue for holding the event and look forward to our combined effort in holding the April 2011 meeting.  Lastly we would like to thank our District 9 Vice President, Darrell Beavers.  He encouraged our agency to rejoin the VAVRS and participate in these events and we very much enjoying doing so.

Dante Rescue wants to make everyone aware.  We encourage our junior members to be active with their school and participate in after school activities as much as possible.  With that said, we want everyone to understand that we say this to help our junior members be as educated and active as possible.  This wasn't exactly what we intended by encouraging our members to do after school events.

The Virginia Office of EMS announced they be discontinuing use of its Pre-Hospital Patient Care Reporting System and transitioning to the new Virginia Pre-Hospital Information Bridge.  This is a major change as EMS agencies in Virginia will no longer be using paper forms for documentation and would begin using computers to document patient care.  This should improve quality of documentation and care for all agencies.  Dante Rescue Squad is scheduled to begin using the new system on March 16, 2010.
